TALPA Inspection

Innovative inspection method for cantilever retaining walls

ETH ZUrich | Underground Corrosion Inspection

At ETH Zurich, a solution has been developed for the previously unsolved problem of non-destructive inspection of cantilever retaining walls.

Corrosion

Aging infrastructure in industrialized countries

The aging of infrastructure challenges many industrialized countries. As the age of structures increases, the risk of corrosion for reinforced concrete structures also rises. Corrosion of the reinforcement is the most common cause of premature maintenance of road traffic infrastructure. Consequently, the importance of condition assessment and monitoring will increase in the future. On the one hand, to minimize the expected rise in maintenance costs, and on the other hand, to ensure the safety of users. Unfortunately, there is currently a lack of non-destructive inspection methods for structures such as retaining walls, which are partially covered by soil and cannot be reliably inspected visually.

Non-destructive corrosion detection in retaining walls.

Our technology for corrosion detection.

TALPA Inspections has developed a nondestructive method for detecting corrosion in the rear bending reinforcement of the horizontal construction joint of retaining walls. The technology is based on proven electrochemical measurement methods (such as potential field measurement).

The method utilizes existing drainage pipes and ensures the necessary electrolytic contact for corrosion detection through a patented procedure. Thus, corrosion can be detected non-destructively along the construction joint.
